Tales From the 2024 Molecular Genetics and Microbiology Retreat

From Friday 09.06 to Saturday 09.07, we took a trip to Greensboro, North Carolina to participate in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology’s Annual Retreat. The two days we spent in “Tournament Town” were filled were fascinating talks, a successful poster session, and our debut as a trivia team.

It was a wonderful experience to interact with the curious minds in our department as well as learn about the topics that excite and inspire them. We hope to continue bringing this positive energy and enthusiasm into our work as well!

Take a Hike!

In between talks, we took an impromptu hike at the Bog Garden at Benjamin Park! (But next time we’ll bring our hiking boots)

From left to right: Vivian, Dr. Adrianna, Ariella, Hannah, Molly, and Erin!

*Hannah and Erin are our rotating grad students!

Ariella presenting her prize-winning poster! We are so proud of her!

In addition to being our wonderful research technician, Molly has been hard at work exploring the physical “architecture” of the human genome - she shared her preliminary findings on her poster!

What is “The San Roman Empire?”

We came away from MGM trivia with first place after answering questions about pop culture, physics, and Duke history. Can we defend our title at next year’s retreat?

Thank you for catching up with the San Roman Lab - stay tuned for more exciting explorations and events!

Scenes from a Scientific Summer

Updates from our first summer in the lab!

Quests for antibodies, several lab renovations, and three new lab members later, our first summer at Duke has come to a close! This summer we experienced growth of all kinds: intellectual growth, growth of our lab community, and even the growth of our first cell line!

They say that a picture is worth one thousand words, so take a look at what we’ve been up to!

"Cell-fie" Time!

Our undegrads (Ire and Vivian) learned how to passage cells for the first time!

A Behind the “Genes” Tour

Special thanks to Devi Swain for giving us a tour of Duke’s gene sequencing facility!

Go Bulls!

Cheering on the Durham Bulls and enjoying "America's Favorite Pastime" (as well as snacks) together!

From Left to Right:

Molly, Ariella, Wool E. Bull, Ire, Dr. Adrianna, and Vivian

Hello! My name is…

NOT Inigo Montoya, but Persimmon the Penguin, our lab mascot!

Ire presented the first San Roman Lab poster as part of the Summer Scholars in Genome Science and Medicine program!

Alternative Title: Ire’s hard work and curiosity onto a 36" x 48" poster!

It’s Coming Together!

Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither was the San Roman lab, but after a summer of unboxing and organizing, our lab is coming together quite nicely!

Stay tuned for all of the exciting things our lab is up to in the coming months! See you in autumn!

“All in all, it was a never-to-be-forgotten summer — one of those summers which come seldom into any life, but leave a rich heritage of beautiful memories in their going — one of those summers which, in a fortunate combination of delightful weather, delightful friends and delightful doing, come as near to perfection as anything can come in this world.”

New lab members!

We are excited to welcome the first two members of the lab!

Meredyth (Molly) Albright bravely joined us as a Research Technician II and the first member of the lab at the end of January.

Mark Katz is a graduate student in the Molecular Genetics and Microbiology graduate program and joined us at the beginning of March for a rotation.

To celebrate these milestones, we went out to lunch at The Commons! We also took the opportunity to invite our neighbors in the Burke Lab, Jack and Alana, to thank them for all of their help in getting the lab set up!
